You might think that because Dr. Herluf Lund grew up surrounded by some of the best surgeons, he followed a direct path to becoming one of the leading plastic surgeons in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as Southern Illinois communities such as Belleville and Edwardsville. Coming from a family well-known in the region’s medical community, Dr. Lund found the science of medicine fascinating. At Tufts University, though, he majored in drama and sociology.
“I loved medicine, but I wanted something that engaged my other interests,” Dr. Lund says, “which included the challenges of the arts and social sciences.”
Plastic surgery, says the St. Louis native, combines science and aesthetics in a way that satisfies his “renaissance” nature: “It is not just a formula you follow to get the result, but a combination of science, analysis, and artistic sense. It’s a great job!”

I am so pleased with my results and I highly recommend Dr. Lund to anyone! In fact I am 25 days out of my surgery and 2 of my friends are going this week to get their augmentation after seeing my results. The facilities that Dr. Lund uses are also wonderful. This is a top notch place and doctor!”

What traits define you as a plastic surgeon?
There are really 3 traits that come to mind. They may seem contradictory, but they actually work very well together.
I’m a perfectionist. I give my best effort in every case to get the best possible result. This doesn’t always mean a “perfect” result because none of us can control every part of any process.
I’m also an activist. If you’re going to be part of something, you should take an active role. I’ve held leadership position in national plastic surgery societies and am involved in researching new techniques and treatments to benefit my patients.
Finally, I’m conservative. This means I highly value our patients’ resources and research new technologies to ensure they are effective, safe, and provide value to our patients. Gimmicks and fads are out there, and our patients trust us to do the research and provide them with safe and effective care.
What significant changes have you observed since entering private practice in 1991?
Cosmetic medicine is now a lifelong process, rather than something people begin to consider when they reach a certain stage of life. Beginning with customized skin care, cosmetic procedures, both non-surgical and surgical, address challenges and changes that occur throughout our lives. Some conditions we are born with and other changes occur as we mature. Pregnancy and childbirth, weight fluctuations, and aging are all reasons people seek cosmetic surgery. These changes in the practice of cosmetic medicine require that plastic surgeons continue to be innovators.
Tell us a bit about your family.
I am the man who is so lucky to be married to my wife, Cyndie, for almost 30 years. We have 3 children, Samantha and our twins Elizabeth and Gyde (who is named after my father). Despite the demands of our children’s busy lives, we still get together for ski trips and holidays at home. It is really heartening that they still look forward to coming home and hanging out with friends and family. It is a true blessing when you and your children can enjoy spending time together even as they get older.
Describe a case that made a lasting impression.
There are many, many patients who made wonderful impressions throughout my career, but I’ll choose a more recent case. A woman in her early 20s with severely asymmetrical and misshaped breasts came to our practice. She had almost never worn a swimsuit, never felt comfortable in relationships, and limited her friendships. We discussed her concerns and desires and I created a treatment plan based on that discussion. Now I look forward to when she returns for follow-up appointments and describes how surgery changed her life in such a positive manner. She sees life so differently and is so happy, and that makes everyone in the office feel good. You never really know what an impact you can make.

One Patient’s Story*
“I am a 41 year old mother of two who has struggled with weight my whole life. I have spent a lot of time and energy on fitness and weight loss programs through the years. Even when I would achieve success I would still look in the mirror and be disappointed because of the extra skin. When I decided to have a tummy tuck I knew I wanted the best because it was a lifelong dream. I was told about St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery Center Inc. from a friend. The minute I walked into the office they exceeded my expectations. They were so professional and they made me feel like I was the only patient they had. Now when I look in the mirror I can honestly say that I am in the best shape of my life. It is a confidence I could only have achieved through my successful surgery with St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery Inc. I travel two and a half hours to be seen by Dr. Lund and I would not have it any other way. I think he is a true artist and I plan to be a very good customer for a very long time!!”
